Uganda

Uganda, the Pearl of Africa is home to approximately half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas – the largest living primates on earth. Uganda has two national parks where one can go gorilla trekking;

  • Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
  • Mgahinga National Park

A recent 2012 Gorilla census puts the total population in Bwindi at around 420 gorillas, up from 302 individuals in 2006. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park now has as many as 14 habituated gorilla families available that can be visited by tourists. Each group allows a maximus of 8 tourists thus a total of 112 gorilla permits are available everyday.  These gorilla families can be tracked from various ranger posts in four different locations in Bwindi; – Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo.

Mgahinga National Park has only one habituated gorilla group. The Nyakagezi group often roams and cross to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. For the past two years the group has been stable in Uganda and gorilla permits for this group can be booked at the Uganda Wildlife Authority offices or at the park headquarters.
